Boost for Retreat junior rugby
Junior rugby in Retreat recently received a major boost when touring Irish side Belvedere College presented a coaching clinic at the Allenby Drive Sportsfield in Retreat, Cape Town.
The clinic at Retreat was part of the club’s drive to promote junior rugby in the area, says club president Peter Scheepers. “Our club is celebrating its105th year and we need to look at our future,” said Scheepers. “This is a community club and we are looking at attracting juniors from all schools in the area,” he said. The club is planning to start a junior academy, to be spearheaded by its director of coaching Johan Gerber. Senior coach of Belvedere, Ray Southam, said he was impressed at the skills of the young Retreat players. “I last visited South Africa during the 1995 Rugby World Cup and can honestly say that the skill levels of the youngsters have improved a lot,” said Southam, who also presented rugby clinics in townships during his 1995 visit. Earlier this year Retreat also hosted Welsh club, Wrexham, as part of the 105th anniversary festivities. |
